미국의 컨설팅 기업인 프로스트 앤 설리번(Frost & Sullivan)이 디지털 산업이 농업에 기여할 수 있는 효과(Farming 4.0 : The Impact of Digital Industries on Agriculture) 보고서를 발표했다.

보고서에 따르면 2050년까지 전 세계 인구는 90억 명에 이를 것으로 예상된다. 인구 변화에 따른 식량 수요를 충족하기 위해서는 식량 생산 능력이 현재보다 70% 이상 증가되어야 한다. 농업 생산성 향상에 컴퓨터 비전(Computer Vision), AI, 블록체인 등 디지털 기술이 어떻게 기여할 수 있음을 보여준다.

사람없이도 일 할 수 있는 자율주행 농기계(Autonomous Agricultural Machinery), 어디에서 무슨 일을 해야 하는지 알고 있는 GPS(Global Positioning System) 등 디지털 기술이 전통적인 사람 중심의 농업을 스마트하게 바꾸고 있다. 향후 5~10년간 해충 침입 예측, 질병 완화, 기후 변화 대응 및 농업 자원 관리 최적화에 기여해 농업 생산성을 높일 수 있을 것으로 전망한다.
